Minutes of the Alpaca Research Foundation Meeting
July 28, 2009

 

Present were Allan Dewald, Abe Rosenbloom, Pat Long, Patricia Craven, Lisa Williamson, Randy Larson, Karen Baum and Michelle Ing. 

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. PST. 

Presidents Report: 

Abe Rosenbloom:  ARF BOD need to fill out the Duality of Interest and Self-Assessment form and mail them to Abe ASAP. 

June Minutes:  Allan moved to approve June minutes.  Randy seconded.  Passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s report.   Allan moved to approve the treasurer’s report.  Patricia seconded.  The treasurer’s report was approved unanimously.  Please see the complete report for details.

Development Committee: Nancy Haus and Marilynn Scoggins have joined the Development Committee.  Also, Patricia, Marilynn and Lona have formed a subcommittee to work on the new website, which is being designed by Aly Benson of AKA Design Group, Camas, Washington.  The development committee is continuing their work on email blasts.  Also they are exploring ideas with ARF BOD about allowing an individual to sponsor a particular study posted on the ARF website.  Individuals sponsoring a particular study would have to meet a minimum amount to do this.  The idea came from Morris Animal Foundation which has similar sponsorships for individual studies available on their website.

MAF & LMRG Update:  The three newly approved MAF L/A division projects are Dose Titration of Oral and Injectable Moxidectin and Oral Morantel Tartrate in Camelids, Lisa Williamson, DVM, University of Georgia; The effects of Mycoplasma haemolamae genetics to virulence, detection and vertical transmission, Jeffrey Lakritz, Ohio State; and Generation of an integrated physical map for the alpaca genome, Terje Raudsepp, PhD, Texas A & M and Warren Johnson, PhD, NCI.  Ongoing studies include:  Investigation of the Multiple-Malformation Syndrome in Llamas and Alpacas Associated with Choanal Atresia, Anibal G. Armien, DVM, University of Minnesota; Prevalence of Mycoplasma haemolamae Infection in South American Camelids in the Southeastern United States, Alessandra Pellegrini-Masini, DVM, PhD, The University of Georgia; and Arginine Stimulation Testing in Healthy and Sick Camelids Anna Firshman, BVSc, PhD. Oregon State University.

MAF will be changing the submission dates for L/A Division preproposals and proposals effective in 2010.  The actual dates are in process of being refined but will generally be in the months of April & August.  The SAB evaluations will be in October. 

The 2009 Camelid Community (CC) Meeting is being held Aug 1-3, in Kansas City.  A prelimary report of the newly approved for funding MAF L/A Division projects have been submitted.  There will be a more detailed follow-up report when MAF releases the official press version.  ARF will also submit details of their newly approved projects in September.  These additional reports will be circulated to CC attendees and camelid periodicals as per routine.                                                                               

New Business: 

Proposal Review:  The seven final ARF proposals were reviewed.  Abe will be emailing out the review results to all ARF BOD prior to the next meeting.

Next meeting is scheduled for 6:00p.m. PST, August 17, 2009.

Abe moved to adjourn the meeting.  Pat seconded.  The meeting was ended at 8:10 p.m. PST.
