Minutes of the Alpaca Research Foundation Meeting
March 24, 2008
Present were Allan Dewald, Karen Baum, Abe Rosenbloom, Lisa Williamson, Patricia Craven, Patrick Long, Michelle Ing and Randy Larson.
The meeting was called to order at 9:06 pm ET.
Presidents Report: Progress reports have been received on all but one of the grants. The speaker for the ARF Lecture at the AOBA Annual Conference will be Dr. Lisa Williamson on "The Vampires Within: The Quiet Rise of Drug Resistant Wire Worms in Alpacas." There was discussion on ways to work in concert with the camel researchers.
Secretary’s Report: February 18 minutes were approved by Randy and seconded by Allan. Passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: The report was discussed (see attachment for 14 Feb – 17 March 08). Approved by Randy seconded by Allan. Passed unanimously.
Development Committee Report: Brochures were mailed to the ARF BOD. AOBA has put ARF back on as a check off on renewals. Lona Nelson Frank has donated an alpaca for the sweepstakes. The proceeds will go to ARF.
MAF & LMRG Update: Allan brought us up to date on the activities at MAF. Many of the camelid preproposals will be asked to submit full proposals.
ARF Sponsored Scientific Meeting 2008: Patricia reported that all the abstracts for the meeting on camelid genetics, February 22-24, 2008 in Scottsdale, AZ are on the ARF website (www.alpacaresearchfoundation.org ). There will be discussion groups formed. The recent conference was a huge success. There is planning starting for the potential of another conference in the future.
There was discussion on DNA banking.
There was discussion on potential research on camelid nutrition. Randy will contact Dr. Bob Van Saun at Penn State Univ. and Karen will contact Dr. Craig Thatcher at Virginia Tech.
The proposal review process will begin soon.
There is a problem with using Skype on conference calls unless using Fire Fox browser on your computer.
The next meeting will be on Monday at 9:00 ET on April 28, 2008.
